7 Questions

Don’t be afraid to ask questions when interviewing international adoption agencies.  This is a HUGE decision!  Here are seven questions to get you started:

1. How many years have you been working in international adoption?

2. Which countries do you work with and how many placements did you make last year from each country? How many years have you been placing children from each of these countries?

3. Do you have a complete description of all fees, including agency fees, translator fees, donations, and the various country fees?

4. If the country I apply to changes its rules and I become disqualified, can I switch to another country?  If the country closes or the program changes significantly can I change programs?

5. Who will help me prepare my dossier?

6. If travel is involved, how long should I expect to be out of the country? Will my spouse and I both need to travel?

7. Do you subcontract with other agencies in countries where your agency is not certified?

A word on waiting

Oh the W word.  How we all, yes that is a very inclusive statement, hate it.  Parents in the adoption process make waiting a household word.  We plaster it across our blogs and facebook updates, we tweet it in our despair.  We always seem to be waiting.  Waiting to start the process, waiting for a referral, waiting to be matched, waiting for our kids to get older, waiting for a phone call, waiting for a court date, waiting for an embassy date, waiting to travel, waiting for the words ______ is yours.  Did I miss anything?

Yes, we are champion waiters.  Here’s a little encouragement as you wait today:

Lamentations 3:22-26

22 Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed,
for his compassions never fail.
23 They are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
24 I say to myself, “The LORD is my portion;
therefore I will wait for him.”
25 The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him,
to the one who seeks him;
26 it is good to wait quietly
for the salvation of the LORD.

Psalm 130:5-6

I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in his word I put my hope. My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning.

Put your hope in HIM as you wait today.  I promise, he has it under control.

What exactly does an adoption ministry do?

That’s a very good question.  Long Hollow, like many other churches across the US, has suddenly seen a rise in families interested in answering the call to adopt and provide orphan care.  This ministry exists not only to support those families but to advocate for the millions of orphans worldwide.  Our mission statement includes the following objectives:

  • Shed light on the call to care for orphans at home and across the globe.
  • Provide families with resources as they consider adoption or foster care.
  • Help families begin and navigate the adoption process.
  • Create community among adoptive and foster care families.
  • Promote orphan care opportunities outside of adoption.
